Which table leg do I need?

ITC Sequoia table leg with floor base and table connector

Choosing a table leg for your motorhome, campervan or caravan shouldn't be hard, but with floor mounted legs, a wall mounted leg, a hybrid of the two and our own tripod to pick from, it's easy to get stuck. Here's how we'd help you choose if you rang the workshop.

The short answer

  • A medium sized table, around 750 x 500mm: Sequoia or Redwood
  • A bed or RIB seat that slides over the floor base: Sequoia, as it sits the lowest
  • You'd like to set it up with one hand: Redwood or Cypress
  • A bigger or heavier table top: Cypress
  • Tight space or L shaped seating: MOD, or the MOD / Cypress hybrid
  • The most freedom to move the table about: the MOD / Cypress hybrid
  • Want the table outside in the awning, or freestanding inside: add a Radix tripod

How the floor mounted legs work

Sequoia, Redwood and Cypress are all pedestal legs, a single leg down the middle of the table. They fix to the surface of the floor, so there's no big hole to cut like the old style legs needed.

All three are made up of the same four parts:

  1. A floor base that screws to the floor
  2. A dust cap that clips on to keep the dirt out when the leg's not in
  3. The table leg, which drops into the floor base
  4. A table connector under the table top, which locks onto the top of the leg

Lift the table and leg out and all that's left is a low base on the floor, which is what makes them so handy when the table turns into a bed.

Sequoia or Redwood?

These two are well matched on strength. Both use a 7in floor base and a 2in leg, and both are happy under a table top of around 750 x 500mm. The difference is in how they're used.

Sequoia has the lowest floor base of the lot, just 12mm off the floor once it's fitted, so a rock and roll bed or RIB seat can slide straight over it. The leg clips in. It doesn't turn easily while it's locked in place, so to swing the table round you lift it out, turn it and drop it back in.

Redwood sits a little higher at 18mm, but it locks with a T-bolt you can do up with one hand, and it turns a full 360° while it's fitted.

So if every millimetre of floor height counts, go for Sequoia. If you'd rather have easy one handed setup and a table you can turn, go for Redwood.

Cypress, for bigger tables

Cypress uses the same T-bolt lock as Redwood, but everything's bigger: an 8in floor base instead of 7in, and a 2.5in leg instead of 2in. It sits 18mm off the floor with the cap on and turns 360°. It's the steadiest of the three, so it's the one we'd point you to for a large motorhome table or a heavy top. It comes in black or silver.

MOD, the wall mounted option

If there's no room for a leg on the floor, the MOD fixes to the wall instead. It's ITC's improved take on a wall mount system you may have seen before, made to much tighter tolerances and with aluminium quick release fasteners.

It's made up of:

  • A wall mount, 170 x 95mm
  • A height adjustable upright
  • An arm that turns 360°
  • A mount under the table top that also turns 360°

Between them, the table can swing out, turn round and tuck away, which is ideal in compact layouts and van conversions.

The MOD / Cypress hybrid

This one takes the Cypress floor base and a special 2.5in leg with an adaptor on top, then fits the MOD's swinging arm to it. You get a leg that's fixed firmly to the floor, but a table that still swings and turns like a MOD, so it works really well with L shaped seating and awkward, offset layouts.

One thing to know: because the arm holds the table out to one side, the hybrid mustn't be used on a Radix tripod, as it would tip over.

Radix, our freestanding tripod

The Radix is our own design, made by us here in Somerset from 6082 T6 aluminium and powder coated in black or silver. It takes a Sequoia, Redwood or Cypress leg, so the table you already have can stand on its own. Most people use it outside in the awning or on the pitch, but it's just as useful inside the van where you'd rather not fix a floor base down.

  • Folds up neatly to store
  • Three removable rubber feet
  • Hidden holes under the feet, so you can peg it into grass with screw in pegs

On grass, or with a top bigger than about 750 x 500mm, we'd always use the pegs for extra stability.
